Bulimia
Bulimia is an eating disorder that, in those affected, drives large food binges followed by feelings of guilt and abnormal behaviors aimed at "neutralizing" the caloric intake of what was consumed. Bulimia is a typically female problem, mainly affecting women between the ages of 16 and 40.
To "neutralize" the caloric intake from large food binges, a person with bulimia adopts various strategies. The most common are:
- self-induced vomiting;
- improper use of laxatives;
- adopting a highly restrictive diet;
- strenuous physical exercise.
Treating bulimia requires a team of specialists and revolves mainly around psychotherapy.
Facing a disorder like bulimia is not something a person does alone. It requires a network: a psychologist, a nutritionist, a doctor, and a trusted person nearby. The first step is to recognize it and ask for help.
